- Summary:
Madarame Kyūtarō (Kitamura Kazuki) is a poor rōnin (wandering samurai without a master to serve) who lives alone in the nagaya (divided row house). Someone gave him a nickname, “madara oni” (capricious ogre) because he always put on a grim face. Although he has yet to make a name for himself, however he hopes to gain employment at a household with his superb swordsmanship since he was a former instructor of swordplay at the Kaga Clan.
On a certain day, Sakichi (Mizusawa Shingo) happens to witness Kyūtarō fine swordsmanship and wish to hire him for a job. Sakichi wants Kyūtarō to kill a white cat named “Tama-no-jyō” that has bewitched his boss Yozaemon (Ito Yozaburo) according to the rumor-mongers. After his boss began to raise the cat, Yozaemon talked to himself a lot and changed to a different personality. Kyūtarō initially turns down the absurd request, but decides to take the job for the lucrative monetary being offered. When Kyūtarō enters the place where the cat is, he sees the lovely “Tama-no-jyō” (real name of small cat: Anago and Wakasakura as well as name of big cat: Sakura).
