  • Summary:
    • Winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and thought by many critics to be even finer than Pather Panchali, Aparajito is the least-known but best film of the trilogy. Beginning as Apu leaves his village with his family and moves to the city of Benares, the film chronicles his growth from a youth into a man, as he faces death and the dissolution of his family and immerses himself in intellectual life at the University of Calcutta.
    • Plangent and intensely moving, the film centres on the relationship between Apu and his doting mother (Karuna Banerjee, in one of the most memorable performances in Indian cinema), who must go to work as a maid when she is suddenly forced to support her family on her own. Though it adheres to many of the tenets of neorealism, Aparajito was shot in a Calcutta studio because Ray feared monsoons would wreak havoc with an outdoor set. “A masterpiece for which terms like ‘simplicity’ and ‘profundity’ seem inadequate”
