Based on a true story during the Jeju Uprising in 1948.

Villagers hear that soldiers have landed on their island looking for communists. The local residents not sure what to do, head for the mountains. Kyung-Joon (Lee Kyung-Joon) knows of a cave where the residents can hide. Some leave behind family members, others leave behind their livestock. Meanwhile, the soldiers are ordered to shoot to kill. A young 20-year-old soldier from Incheon finds himself punished daily for failing to do so. The soldiers get closer to the residents’ hideout.

    Notes:
    • Soldiers speak traditional “Seoul” dialect, which is considered standard Korean, while the local Jeju residents speak “Jeju” dialect. The actors performing as the local Jeju residents are mostly non-professional actors from Jeju and know director O Muel personally.
    • The film had a small budget of ₩210 million (US$190,000), part of which was raised through crowdfunding.
    • Jiseul later won the prestigious World Cinema Dramatic Grand Jury Prize at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. It became the first Korean film ever to win the top prize in this category. Festival organizers said that the jury’s decision was unanimous, and their deliberation lasted less than one minute.
