  • Summary:

Chingmy Yau subs for Anita Yuen in this Wong Jing-produced romantic comedy. Yau is spunky girl-next-door Tung-Tung, who’s hot for rich guy Wing (Tony Leung Chiu-Wai), but she can’t say two words to him thanks to one of those afflictions that occurs only in the movies. It seems she has this annoying problem of hyperventilation whenever a guy she likes looks at her. Then he goes blind in a car accident and his bitchy girl (Lau Kam-Ling) and family disown him.

However, Tung-Tung can suddenly talk to him because his eyes can never meet hers. She helps him through his tough time, pretending to be his private nurse Man-Man. Yes, they fall in love. Wing eventually tries to regain his sight and his respectability. Will he take Tung-Tung with him? Was there ever any suspense? Tung-Tung is aided and abetted by her doddering grandad (Roy Chiao, in a sort-of-sequel to his role in Summer Snow), and brother Eric Kot, who’s annoying as usual.

The characters and situations are two-dimensional but the whole exercise is harmless fluff. Tony Leung is a fine, if not a bit distant, romantic lead and Chingmy Yau is pretty good in what is probably her most likable role. Overall this is commercialized romantic crap that’s primo for undemanding dates, but would be trouble for those looking for one of the great Hong Kong romantic films. Starring Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Chingmy Yau
